About Me

What is a Student Member of the Board of Education?

The Montgomery County Board of Education has 7 voting members and one student representative. This position is held by any junior or senior in Montgomery County Public Schools. The Board of Education (BOE) oversees all of MCPS' operations and policy implementation (infrastructure, staffing, transportation, etc.), as well as managing an over 3 billion dollar yearly budget. The Student Member of the Board (SMOB) is the student representative elected by the students of MCPS to represent their interests and give them a voice on the Board of Education.

About Me

How is the SMOB selected?

All middle and high schools send delegates to the Nominating Convention in February. These delegates narrow down the SMOB candidates to 2 finalists who run in the general election, where ALL middle and high schoolers vote.
